As
poverty and lack of infrastructure have dissolved the health
care offerings in the Lomie region of Africa, we at GeoAid
identified health as our primary initiative. We are developing
programs to address English language education, brick making,
and micro-credit in the form of uniform sewing. We are partnering
with local organizations to promote alternate protein sources
to limit consumption of bush meat (e.g., rodents, birds and
wild animals).
The
most effective health care approach in Lomie involves upgrading
the current infrastructure and capacities; this avoids developing
a parallel health system to meet the needs of mining, timber
and environmental workers in the region.
Earlier
this year, Geovic committed financial resources to develop
a water system and electrical distribution at the Lomie Hospital.
We also initiated a Baby Blanket Program, with the goal of
delivering a new blanket (sewn by American mothers and grandmothers)
to each newborn. The community leaders and women’s groups
organized and volunteered labor for much of the work needed
to prepare the hospital for a volunteer medical team. Private
donations augmented the budget for necessary supplies and
equipment to ensure success in our efforts.
A
mission to deliver medical and surgical treatment for women
in the Lomie subdivision was undertaken in June 2007. This
team worked in the Lomie Hospital alongside Cameroonian nurses
and local doctors.
As a result of our combined efforts, we performed 21 major
surgeries, and we examined and treated over 250 patients.
Only a fraction of the identified surgical and medical cases
were treated. Much work needs to be done.
Beyond
the patients, our goal was to get the Lomie Hospital functioning
as a district hospital. In that sense we were successful;
the hospital is still realizing the results of our work and
treating patients.
This
medical mission was successful due to the preparatory work
done by the community, financial contributions from Geovic,
planning and organization by GeoAid, donations from private
individuals, medical expertise, and long hours of hard work
by the team.
We
need a lot of support in helping the people of this impoverished
region. For the significant work ahead, we are asking for
donations such as:
1.
Medical equipment and supplies
2. Medical team members (doctors, dentists, nurses, EMTs,
etc.)
3. Educators, agronomists, electricians, etc.
4. Cash contributions
5. Others with a willing heart and a strong back
